Student Senate prepares for a new year

Night safety and room draw improvements

The Luther College Student Senate is actively involved in student life. The Student Senate is a student-led group that links the student body to the administration.

“Student Senate’s main duty is reviewing and creating proposals and policies on campus,” said Colton Long (‘09), Student Senate president. “This year, we plan to head up an effort that improves lighting on campus at nighttime for both safety and convenience.”

Student Senate has a very busy year ahead. In addition to addressing lighting issues, they will look at revamping the room draw process as well as the add/drop limits for classes.

Last year’s caf tray issue is also being addressed.

The Student Senate also sponsors campus activities, promotes leadership qualities and gives funding to other groups on campus.

This year, Student Senate has many new members. Courtney Greenley (‘11) is the new secretary and Adam Miller (‘09) is the new vice president. Almost the entire selection of class representatives is new.

“The student body can find out who their representatives are by looking at the Student Senate board outside of the cafeteria,” Long said. “We also plan to have a ‘Get to Know Senate Day’ later this semester.”

Student Senate is always looking for students to help out or get involved.

“We want everyone’s input and the senate meetings are always open to the public,” Long said.

(The group is also in need of another Senior Class Representative. Anyone interested should contact Long at longco01@luther.edu. The process to be in a named position involves an election held every May, in addition to an application process. )

Student Senate meets Tuesday evenings at 6:30 in the Mott-Borlaug room of the Union.
