What were you thinking?

It is my strong belief that sidewalks are communist. They are, in my opinion, the ultimate act of conformity and it irks me that society just expects that one would take the sidewalk over alternate routes. It’s a free country (last time I checked) and I’m going to walk wherever the heck I want! Sidewalks don’t have artificial intelligence. They don’t know exactly where I have to go, nor are they going to lead me directly to my destination regardless of my starting point. And unless there are hidden benefits to their existence that I have yet to discover, sidewalks are worthless — except on rainy days.
Now for a moment there, I thought that Luther was with me on this one. Over the summer they took out some of the sidewalks, along with the street that used to run from Koren to the Union. I thought that this was a step in the right direction…you know, ‘sidewalks suck!’ and all that crap. I was mildly excited by this, until the signs went up: “Please stay off the sod.†Upon reading this, my joy turned to aggravation.
First it’s parking spaces and now it’s places to walk? You’re killing me, LC! I mean, there was an ungodly amount of sod used and depending on the quality, those squares of grass are not exactly the cheapest things. Not to mention the administration didn’t lay it themselves, which means they paid someone…more money down the drain. Is this what I’m paying for? Where does this money come from?
My first guess would be our technology fee, seeing as how my computer is plugged INTO THE WALL and I still don’t get any freaking internet! Ridiculous! Yeah it’s all well and good that we got new computers in some labs…but I’m talking about the things that affect me directly. We each paid enough to have our own computer — the least they could do is have our internet work.
And back to the whole taking out streets idea. With more thought, I wonder…why that street? What were the benefits of removing THAT street? I’ll tell you what the disadvantages are. You know that street in front of Larsen? Well it’s two-way now, and so is High Street in front of the CFA in order to compensate for the missing street and allow traffic to flow more smoothly. After four years of living here, I’ve become quite conditioned to looking ONE WAY on those streets since they have always been ONE WAY! I surprised no one has gotten smoked coming out of the building yet because they didn’t look both directions. I almost have, and probably will before the end of the year. Never thought I’d be coming back on campus only to develop a FEAR FOR MY LIFE!
So in short, Luther, yet again…WHAT WERE YOU THINKING? Give me my internet back or I’m walking on the sod…if I survive another day crossing the street, that is.
