Art display ‘embodies’ LC artists’ opinions on the body
Sarah Nance (‘09) will present an art show in the Center for the Art’s Gregerson Gallery titled “Embodiment.†Organized by Nance, the show will display artwork created by Luther students. The show will open Nov. 15 and be on display for one week.
The students’ artwork is all centered on the theme of the body.
“All of the artwork will explore the issue of the physical self and how that is experienced by a variety of people,†said Nance.
While the show exhibits a topic of personal interest to Nance, it also fulfills a project requirement for the Women and Gender Studies 110 course. The project seeks to engage the public in a topic of the students’ choice.
“The goal is to get people to realize the many different ways people experience their bodies,†said Nance. “It is also to take into consideration how they react to and deal with their own.â€
To organize the show, Nance first had to find students interested in creating and displaying artwork based on the embodiment theme. Some artists created new works specifically for the show and some used work they had created previously for a class or on their own.
Each artist was asked to write a short artist’s statement accompanying their piece to explain how their art fit the theme of embodiment.
A wide variety of media are represented in the show, including conte crayon, tempera paint, oil paint, watercolor, acrylic, collage, prints, sculpture and charcoal drawing.
An opening reception will be held on the first day of the show from 2 to 4 pm. All are welcome to attend the reception and talk with Nance and the artists.
