Better know a blog: How to kill time online

By: Jill Bohle, A&E Editor

Has the new Facebook got you down? Are you tired of checking your Norse Mail every five seconds, only to find nothing new? And Lord knows those Charlie the Unicorn videos have gotten old. Cheer up and check out some of these Web sites.

Garfieldminusgarfield.tumblr.com

Exactly what the title promises, this blog, created by Dan Walsh, removes Garfield from his own comic strip, leaving behind an unbalanced Jon Arbuckle. Without the fat, lasagna-loving cat, all the reader is left with is Jon, who often stares at nothing for two frames before he begins to talk to himself.
Although this blog could easily have caused a law suit over copyright infringement, Jim Davis, the creator of Garfield, turned out to be a huge fan of the blog. He said it was an “inspired thing to do.” He even admitted that it shed light on a hidden side of the comic.
Judging from the blog’s popularity, Davis isn’t the only one who has noticed.

Postsecret.blogspot.com

Post Secret is a community art project started by Frank Warren. After sending his own anonymous postcards out, Warren started his award-winning blog by asking for people to place their secrets on one side of a postcard and send them to him for inclusion in the blog. Created in Nov. 2004, about 200,000 postcards filled with people’s secrets have been mailed to the site over the past five years. The site is updated once a week on Sundays, and the visitor count stays in the millions.

The postcards selected for publication on the blog are sometimes funny, sometimes cryptic, sometimes sad, but always touchingly human. If you want to contribute your own secret, mail your 4x6 postcard to: Post Secret, 13345 Copper Ridge Rd., Germantown, Maryland 20874

Fmylife.com

This blog aims to capture the funny and sad events happening in its readers’ everyday lives. Originally a French Web site, the blog allows anybody to contribute their own story, the only requirement being that it starts with “today,” and ends with “FML.”

After reading the submitted short anectdotes, viewers can also vote for either “I agree, your life is f***ed” or “you deserve that one.” While some are funnier than others, one Top FML reads, “Today, I received my passport in the mail. They got my birthdate wrong. Then I picked up my birth certificate that I had sent in with the application. Turns out my parents have been celebrating my birthday on the wrong day for 16 years. FML .”
