Activities Abound for fall fun in Decorah

Whether it’s lounging under an oak tree on campus or exploring the depths of a cave, there is a bevy of ways to enjoy the fall weather.
On campus one can join in on the ever-present game of Ultimate Frisbee on the library lawn, or play sand volleyball on the courts tucked between Ylvisaker and the Towers.
Other students find reason to adventure off-campus with so many natural wonders close by. Hike to the famous outlook at Pulpit Rock, or rent a canoe or kayak from the nearby River & Trail Outfitters to explore the Upper Iowa River.

Expansive bike and foot trails snake throughout Oneota Valley and offer a fun way to see Iowa nature at its best. Try the trail behind Baker Prairie for a secluded walk, or explore Twin Springs Park with friends.
Most Luther students can give recommendations for their favorite nature destinations.
“Dunning’s Spring is by far the best,” Davin Lillegard (‘10) said. “It’s got a bit of everything.”
The famed spring and the nearby footpaths make this area a popular destination, whether you want to ramble or relax.
Christy Eminger (‘12), suggests visiting Phelps Park.
“It’s a great place to escape the people and stress at school, plus it has a great view of the river,” Eminger said.
For some, fall is a time for thrill-seeking. Jacob Blain (‘12) shared his experiences of spelunking in nearby caves with his friends. “We’ve found some caves that are quite extensive,” he said. “Last year we found this big crevice in the ground; we crawled down about 100 feet and we still don’t know how far it goes.”

To those who want to try spelunking for themselves, Blain suggests bringing a flashlight and a partner.
“It’s not something for the claustrophobic,” Blain said.
Caves are sprinkled throughout Oneota Valley, but the most accessible from campus is on Ice Cave Road, not far from Dunning’s Spring.
Don’t know how to get to the mentioned places? Ask around: most seasoned Luther students and staff know their way around the popular nature destinations.
