LC Democrats: Violent rhetoric and Bachmann

By: Steven Thai,

The face of the Republican party who is always on Fox News is Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann from Minnesota’s sixth district. The first quote I would like to start out with is, “Multicultural diversity, which on the face sounds wonderful, let’s appreciate and value everyone’s culture. But not all cultures are equal, not all values are equal.” Really, Michelle, because I am pretty sure that America was founded on the basis of diversity. I do not believe Bachmann really understands the purpose of diversity. It is key for all of us to understand and embrace; without diversity we are unable to understand and appreciate our surroundings. According to the Diversity Center’s mission statement, its job is to promote a greater appreciation and a deeper understanding of the diverse individuals and groups of people, strengthen access to multicultural perspectives and advocate for policies that safeguard the inclusion and participation of all members of the community. How does degrading multicultural diversity help make you a better congresswoman or even allow you to be elected?

Bachmann, who is no stranger to violent rhetoric, told Fox News Oct. 5 that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi would beat the blue dog Democrats to death over the public option (talking about health care reform’s possible public option). First of all, who says that blue dog Democrats and maybe even some common sense Republicans won’t vote for a public option? The public health insurance option will provide the uninsured and those who can’t find affordable coverage with a real choice. It will also help cut down on emergency room visits for common aliments, such as flu, colds, sprains, sore throats and common ear infections, all of which could be handled by a family physician. But those that do not have access to affordable health insurance are the reason our health care prices are rising at such astronomical rates.

And the final wonderful Bachmann quote that I will end with is, “Obama wants kids to take field trips to abortion clinics to kill their babies and not tell their parents,” which was on the house floor in response to sex education returning to public schools. This is a key part of going through puberty. Without sex education, studies from all over the world shows a large increase in STI’s (sexually transmitted infections) and an increase in teen pregnancy. The word delusional comes to mind when I think of my Congresswoman!
