Discover indoor activities

As the temperature drops, most of us decline outdoor Frisbee golfing, running or biking and begin relaxing inside by the heaters. However, just because many activities are limited to 70 degree and sunny weather doesn’t mean you have to spend all winter twiddling your chilly thumbs. Luther offers a wide variety of wintry weather going-ons, whether you are looking to keep active, dabble in some culture or simply socialize.
If you wish to remain active this winter but find it too cold to brave the outdoors, there are plenty of activities to keep you fit, no matter your taste in exercise. Beyond the Legends Fitness Center, there are plenty of classes and intramurals in which to take part. All are aimed at giving a work out in an enjoyable way.
“We’re always trying to give students ways to keep active in traditional or non-traditional ways,” said Vicky Jaeger, director of recreational sports.
Thus, among basketball intramurals or yoga classes, there are self-defense classes and even events such as scooter hockey and black light volleyball games. Check outside the Recreational Sports office in the Union for times and dates.
If you’re looking for some groove to go along with your workout, check out the Luther College Swing and Ballroom Club. Teaching sessions are held Tuesday and Thursday night from 9:10 p.m. to 9:55 p.m. and 10 p.m. to 10:45 p.m. in the CFA, ranging from east coast swing to rumba.
To broaden your cultural horizons and maybe get into the holiday spirit, check out the music and theatre department. Christmas at Luther supplies a great night out and celebrates the season. It runs Dec. 3-6 and showcases all of the Luther choirs and the Symphony Orchestra.

Also, band, vocal and orchestral recitals are always going on. They are a great way to hear some good music and support fellow classmates.
As always, the theatre department is hard at work, and new shows will appear throughout the winter. To find exact times and dates for recitals and plays, check the events calendar and The Bulletin.
Though the sunlight may be limited, social life doesn’t have to be. There are plenty of good, spur-of-the-moment activities for winter months.
The greater Decorah community has plenty of things to do. Meet with a couple friends and try a new restaurant, stop in to a hobby shop or pop in to a community event.
“The Blue Heron Knittery was a great experience,” said Andrew Ritter (‘11). “I stopped by to learn how to knit, and they made it easy to do so. Now that I can knit, people want me to make them things, so I’ll certainly be using my new hobby.”
If you prefer to stay on campus to socialize, check out the library for a classic movie or see if a friend has a new release. For a gaming mood, try a holding tournament with board or video games. Simply grab a few friends, a Wii, deck of cards or game of Clue, set up the brackets and enjoy.
Whatever your preference, cold weather activities will be abundant this season. Keep warm and experience the many great events and opportunities this winter at Luther.
