Fall Fest

It was a celebration filled with music, games, hot cider and students’ favorite frost-your-own cookies. SAC Special Events hosted the second annual Fall Fest in Marty’s Tuesday, Nov. 3rd.

Student-run acappella groups Undeclared and Beautiful Mess both gave performances. Highlights included Undeclared’s performance of the Jason Mraz song “I’m Yours” and Beautiful Mess’s performance of an arrangement of Miley Cyrus’s “Party In the U.S.A.” Also, a new barbershop quartet of first-year men performed the Beatles’ “Yesterday,” as well as “I’ll Fly Away.”

The duo General B. and the Wiz, comprised of Quincy Voris (‘12) and Seth Duin (‘12), performed several covers, including “I Am The Walrus” by the Beatles and a Tenacious D song. Another Luther duo, Ehler Orngard (‘10) and Jacob Johnson (‘10), performed music by Sufjan Stevens and The Shins. The Japanese dance group Yosakoi and hip-hop dance group Eklipse also gave performances.

Carah Claflin (‘12) enjoyed the diverse selection of musical acts.

“I really liked the variety of music,” Claflin said. “I like that we got to hear lots of different bands and groups.”

There were also interactive games between musical performances, facilitated by SAC Special Events members. The first game was a doughnut eating contest, in which the contestants had to eat doughnuts off a string without their hands. Emmalee Johnson (‘12) enjoyed the game.

“I felt like a shark,” Johnson said. “When else do you have a chance to eat a doughnut off a string? More fall fests, please!”

Another game had contestants try to find bubble gum hidden in pie tins of whipped cream, using only their mouths. The first contestant to blow a bubble won the contest.

Mari Kise (‘13) said she enjoyed the game, but was less excited about the actual bubble gum.

“That was the least bubblicious gum I’ve ever had,” Kise said.

Finally, there was a partner mummy wrapping contest, in which pairs competed to see who could wrap their partner in a roll of toilet paper the fastest.

375 people attended the event, similar to the year before. SAC Special Events co-chair Rachel Loeffler-Kemp (‘11) described the Fall Fest as a success.

“This event just keeps getting better and better,” Loeffler-Kemp said.

SAC Special Events’ next event is Christmas in the Union, and they have plans to work with the Diversity Center to explore new ideas for events in the spring.
