Christmas on campus

SAC’s Christmas in the Union brings together students, faculty, staff and community members

Every year, Christmas comes to the Luther campus bringing treats, a festive holiday atmosphere and, of course, Santa. On Dec. 9 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. students and community members enjoyed frost-your-own-cookie stations, hot apple cider, hot cocoa and crafts with the PALS and College Ministries groups.
There was also a holiday movie showing and performances by some of Luther’s own independent singing groups. Santa Claus even made an appearance for pictures and gift requests.
The Student Activities Council Special Events committee coordinated with Dining Services, the Luther Book Shop, College Ministries and PALS to create this annual winter event in the Union for Luther students, faculty, staff and the community.

“A lot of faculty and community members come; it’s a pretty diverse event,” SAC Special Events Co-Chair Sarah Long (‘10) said. “It’s a good break from the finals rush and a good way to celebrate the holidays on campus.”

Because of the PALS connection which gives the elementary mentoring program an opportunity to hang out on campus and meet Santa, a lot of community members, including parents and faculty turn out for a more relaxed time with the students.

The Book Shop offered 10 percent off everything in the store in addition to hosting the annual Holiday House contest, which invites Luther students and faculty to create a small holiday themed house out of whatever materials they can find.

Dining Services invited community members, students and faculty and staff to a Holiday Dinner in the cafeteria and also provided the treats for everyone to enjoy in the Union.

SAC Special Event co-chair Rachel Loeffler-Kemp (‘11) believes this event to be one of the best and most successful of the year.

“It’s a really great way for students to mingle with the community and get into the holiday spirit,” Loeffler-Kemp said.
