The Student Activities Council’s Concerts committee has started advertising for the upcoming spring concert in the Regents Center featuring Stephen Speaks, Ingrid Michaelson and Augustana. Students intrigued by indie-pop or rock melodies will likely be the most excited to head to the show April 17.

Stephen Speaks, an independent musician and aspiring record label producer, will open the night. He started recording during his high school years, signed a record deal and eventually started his own studio.

Michaelson is a New York-based singer/songwriter. Her most recent album, “Everybody,” briefly reached the top of the iTunes charts and has received outstanding reviews from publications such as The New York Times, Blender Magazine and People Magazine. Michaelson is best known for her Billboard-topping hit, “The Way I Am,” which was featured on an Old Navy commercial in 2007.

Augustana is a rock band from San Diego. The group has been featured on numerous tours with headlining bands such as Switchfoot, The Fray, Maroon 5, OneRepublic and Snow Patrol. Some of Augustana’s most popular songs include “Boston” and “Sweet and Low.”

The SAC Concerts committee will coordinate and sponsor the event. The process for choosing a band starts with the Concerts committee holding meetings to compile a list of artists people would like to see on campus.

Co-Chair Laura Forst (‘11) is excited about the upcoming visiting artists.

“First, we had a meeting to throw out different ideas,” Forst said. “Then we send the top five [bands or artists] to our agent.”

Choosing groups depends a great deal upon the price range and touring locations that the band offers.

“It turned out that both Ingrid Michaelson and Augustana were the first two potential options we sent in,” Forst said. “They weren’t touring together, but they had dates available and were willing to come perform.”

Students are already gossiping about the approaching concert.

“I’m excited. [Ingrid Michaelson] has that song about Target,” said Katrina Houmes (‘12).

Kate Hammond (‘12) shared a similar sentiment.

“I’m excited, too,” Hammond said. “I recognize some of their songs on the radio.”

Tickets for the show are already on sale in the Box Office. Students with the Co-Curricular Activities Fee can get tickets for free, otherwise they are $25 each. The Box Office is open Monday-Friday from 9-10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
