Sundstrom a king of the court

Scott Sundstrom (‘12) is a king—at least that is what his tennis teammates think.

The standout singles player is currently ranked 24th in the nation and sixth in the region, and after an impressive weekend, those numbers are only expected to rise.

Sundstrom came to Luther from Centennial High School in Lino Lakes, Minn. There, he was named to the All-Conference team five times and was a section 4AA double champion.

Head Coach Brian Huinker knew he had a good player, but what happened next surprised him.

As a first-year student, Sundstrom won the Iowa Conference Flight A singles tournament and was named Iowa Conference MVP.

“I knew Scott would be good and be a good addition,” Huinker said. “I didn’t know he would be this good.”

And so much for a sophomore slump. If Sundstrom’s national rank isn’t impressive enough, he recently defeated the number 12 ranked player in the nation, University of Chicago’s William Zhang.

Currently, Sundstrom’s singles record is a team best 11-2. He also has eight victories in doubles.

Huinker doesn’t set goals for Sundstrom but knows he has the tools and love for the game to keep him one of the top players in the nation.

“He trains with a top-20 Blue Chip recruit in the Twin Cities during the summer and on breaks,” Huinker said. “It also helps that he hates losing.”

Sundstrom will be able to showcase his game in Florida March 21-28 as the tennis team travels to Orlando for spring break.
