What is art and how offensive can it be before it surpasses that definition? Luther students and six well-known artists from the group Paintallica explored this question with an all-night art workshop April 9 and 10 from 5 p.m. until 5:30 a.m. in the Center for the Arts. The group looked at issues of “offensive art.” Together they created a work that drew a large amount of attention in the following days due to its explicit content.
Paintallica is a set of collaborating artists from around the country whose mission is to make works that are “intentionally confrontational and impulsive,” and “address cultural, psychological and social issues with blunt and unflinching force.” Essentially, the group has come to use art as a way to project the things that mainstream culture may not want to look at.
“It’s a confrontational style that pulls you back and then makes you think why you’re reacting the way you do,” Professor of Art Bob Larson said.
Specializing in performance works, Paintallica artists begin their group pieces with a day of collecting materials, then work during the night and sleep during the day for two to three days until the piece is considered finished. Paintallica’s work with Luther students was no different.
A nocturnal escapade, the project began with exercises in how to be offensive. The question in mind was when can art be “appropriately” offensive.
Those in the session were instructed to create a work and then swap with another person. They would then purposely try to offend the original artist by altering the piece while still maintaining its integrity. This cycle went on for a while before the students and instructors began the collective pieces, which were installed in the main foyer of the Center for the Arts.
Using assorted mediums, the grand piece was constructed by 46 people throughout the night. Students were pushed to be forward, brash and uncensored.
“It was really cool because I got to meet all these world-renowned artists and work with them to make this giant piece,” participant Anna Zaffarano (‘11) said. “What I heard overall [from participants] was that it was an enjoyable experience, and they’d do it again.”
Raw, provocative and completely uncensored, the piece was ripe with nudity, genitalia, profanity and slurs. Students were stopped and asked to assess what parts of work could be seen as art, however offensive they were, and what parts took away from the integrity of the art due to the offensive content. The students then revised their work based on their decisions.
“You can’t just write f*** you,” Professor of Art Ben Moore said. “It needs to have a point if it is art. However, we should be able to have a dialogue about sex, violence, profanity.”
The original piece was left on display for a time before the art department further censored it. Although some viewers commented that the work was ugly, inappropriate and “not art,” the art faculty emphasized that the censorship was not meant to silence the piece and what it stood for. Instead it was in consideration for the public setting in which the work was housed, which was open to young children and a party for a faculty member.
