Smile! You're on candid camera
Be prepared. April 21 to May 8 promise candid photos and embarrassing situations. Service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega is sponsoring “Classy Candids,” a fundraiser encouraging students to capture their unsuspecting friends and classmates on film and publicly display them for $1.
Because the photos will be displayed in the glass case outside the cafeteria turnstile, the photos may not be incriminating, inappropriate or discriminatory. Moreover, any pictures portraying or suggesting the use of alcohol will not be displayed.
Students in the potentially awkward photos may secretly curse their friends under their breath, but to remove the photos from the case costs another $3.
A number will be assigned to each picture pinned up on the board. Students who wish that the picture come down simply need to send in money with the corresponding photo number.
APO member and fundraiser Alex Nyman (‘13) is excited to see how her project will turn out.
“I had the idea in junior year of high school to promote prom funds, but it was quickly shot down,” Nyman said.
Nyman figures that a college setting would be more appropriate, potentially producing better and more interesting results.
“Don’t worry though, we screen the photos beforehand,” Nyman said.
In addition, according to APO member, Sydnie Reynolds (‘12), all the money collected will go into a general fund, which is used for community service and activities here on campus.
“The money from this event will go into the APO fund, which is distributed throughout many different areas,” Reynolds said. “Some of those include service projects, like the baskets we put together for the nursing home earlier this year, Kool-Aid, which is an exciting event for students during reading day on the library lawn and other various events that go back to the community.”
Upon sharing her idea with her peers, Nyman received immediate positive feedback regarding the fundraiser. Many APO members are enthusiastic about the upcoming project.
“I really hope that this becomes a successful fundraiser, and I think that students will enjoy it if there is enough participation,” Reynolds said. “Since the display will be up for two and a half weeks, my hopes are that students will catch on quickly and still have time to participate. Also, the Post Secret board seems to be a big hit, and I think this activity is sort of along the same lines.”
It’s easy to see “Classy Candids” as an opportunity for a dollar well spent. Now is the chance to one-up a friend, get back at that annoying roommate or expose the life-long Mario Kart addiction of your noisy neighbor.
Embarrassing photos may be sent to SPO #2041 or emailed to apo@luther.edu beginning April 21. Anyone can send in submissions, and the cost is $1 for up to two photos.
