Campus Security Capers

Sometime over night on Friday, Nov. 11 a stone bench on the south side of the Center for the Arts was broken. It appears someone may have tried lifting the bench but then dropped it on the ground causing it to break into pieces.
From the desk of the editor:
This past weekend, I was walking through downtown Washington, D.C. with the Chips editorial staff, when we came across a veritable shanty town of tents pitched in a public park. Entirely by accident, we had stumbled across the physical manifestation of our country’s 99%: the Occupy D.C. movement.
From the desk of the editor:
More and more, I find myself looking around in this world and thinking, “seriously?”
Over fall break I had one of these moments, when in a gas station in western Iowa I stumbled across the newest offering in low-calorie soda: Dr. Pepper 10.
Really though, it’s not the product I take issue with as much as the marketing campaign and slogan supporting it. Window clings exclaimed from the cooler that “It’s not for women!!!!”
Letter to the Editor

Dear Chips,
As a former female worker for grounds crew, I believe the writer of the article of last week’s issue titled “Gender roles on grounds crew questioned” handled the issue well. She introduced a line of thought that exists within the crew – “It’s just the way things are” – and followed with a great analysis of this statement by Kim Larson about what this says about our society.
A Letter from the Editors
To Our Readers:
Much like many campus organizations, Luther Chips experiences regular changes in leadership, and this year is no exception. Each new staff builds upon the hard work of those who represented college journalism before them.
A message from your Student Senate
Dear Luther College Students,
Here we are at Luther, some of us starting the end of our term at Luther, some of us just beginning and some of us in the middle. Luther College is a special place full of learning, friends and fun. I know that Luther will always hold a special place in my heart and my few years here have been nothing but amazing.
An Open Letter from the News Desk
To Whom It May Concern:
As many students may know, due to a decrease in the amount of the work-study funding Luther receives from the government, the college has reassessed how it will distribute this funding among its students. The school has chosen to place preference on a need basis, determined by each student’s FAFSA form. This redistribution has cut many students from their previously granted allotments of 10 hours per week to 6 hours per week. This change decreases these students’ annual work-study award by approximately $1000.
