Who broke "breaking news?"

It all started when CNN notoriously reported that the Boston bomber was a dark skinned male and arrested the night of the bombing – the coverage about the coverage. Suddenly Tweets and news stories were written describing how inaccurate certain organizations were reporting on the Boston Marathon bombing.

I’ll be the first to admit it – I cannot wait to see “Star Trek Into Darkness.” My inner – or most times, not so inner – nerd thrives comparing theories with friends about whether the image in the trailer of Spock’s hand on the glass is a reference to the classic “Wrath of Khan” scene in which Spock and Kirk touch hands on opposite sides of a glass panel before Spock dies or if J.J.

I walked into the Union today with the sole aim of buying lunch at Oneota, but instead I got more than I had bargained for. The school fair was still in full gear, so I decided to stop by one of the stands to greet a familiar face. He was presenting about the Political Organizations on campus. Let’s call him Tom, for the sake of confidentiality.

On using the "R" word

Though it’s not something most families experience, having a sister with Down Syndrome is normal to me. You wouldn’t necessarily know it just from talking to me, but it does change how I view daily conversation. It has made me hyper aware of some things, the most insulting of which being the R-word.

Too liberal for my own good

I often describe my youth in Iowa City as ‘too liberal for my own good.’ This is usually meant as a joke, but I have come to realize that it is the unfortunate truth. In my first year at Luther I listened to many friends explain their feelings of disconnect with their hometowns, families and friends in high school, and I was never able to relate.

A former teammate of mine was hit and killed by a car two weeks ago. The news of his death caught me by surprise as I browsed Facebook during a passing period. As I sat there wondering how this could have happened, I thought of all the good memories I had of my teammate and the time I was able to spend with him.
