OM: Yoga provides stress relief on campus

There is a growing interest in yoga among the Luther community. Students can participate in this stress-relieving activity by enrolling in a physical-education skills class or through a course offered by the Wellness program.

Softball sweeps their way to four victories in dome

The nationally ranked #21 Luther College softball team began their 2010 campaign by sweeping the Cobbers of Concordia-Moorhead 12-0 and 8-0, March 5-6 at the Augsburg Dome in Minneapolis. Both games were decided in five innings.

Three Norse earn All-American honors

Helping the Norse secure 10th place at NCAA III National Wrestling Championships March 5-6 were Allyn Plattner (‘10), Jason Pyle (‘11) and Jason Swanson (‘11).

Each wrestler took sixth place in his respective weight division while also earning All-American honors.

Luther wrestling sent five wrestlers to compete in the NCAA III National Championships March 5-6 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Ranked 12th in the nation, the Norse aimed for a top-six finish but knew that all would have to wrestle well in order to accomplish that.

Luther’s baseball team hopes to start this season by picking up where last year’s team left off:winning. To do so, they will need quality hitting, defense and hope that an inexperienced pitching staff can throw well against the Iowa Conference’s toughest teams—Coe, Buena Vista and Wartburg.

Head Coach Brian Huinker sent his number-27 ranked tennis team in two different directions Feb. 27, grabbing two quality wins against St. Ambrose University (Iowa) and St. Olaf College (Minn.) before falling to Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.)

Track and field ends season in Storm Lake

Men place fourth, women sixth at IIAC Indoor Championships

The Luther College track and field teams completed the two-day Iowa Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in fourth place. Buena Vista University hosted the indoor championships Feb. 26-27.

The men’s team posted a point total of 66. Central College won the team championship with 213.8 points and was followed by Wartburg College with 152 and Simpson College with 71.3.

Model United Nations hosts student-faculty basketball game to raise money for organization

Students involved in Model United Nations got together with Luther faculty Feb. 26 to compete in a basketball game to raise money for their organization.

With a $2 admission, over 200 spectators filled the Regents Center gymnasium to both encourage and heckle the players.

Women’s lacrosse begins in April

A new club sport will emerge on Luther campus this spring: women’s lacrosse. Due to student interest, a team has been approved to begin April 6.

Anna DiCecco (‘13) and Kelsey Mundell (‘13) are the driving forces behind the team’s emergence. Both played lacrosse in high school and wanted to create an opportunity to continue at Luther.

Men’s basketball closes season with win at Loras; women lose

Larson, Stenhaug lead teams with 13 and 20, respectively

The men’s and women’s basketball teams concluded their seasons Feb. 20 with games at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa.

The men’s team (12-12) played their best game of the season, according to student-coach Tyler Balow (‘10), where they lead by as many as 14 points in the first half en route to a 76-68 win.

Women’s swimming and diving finishes first, men second at Liberal Arts Championships

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving competed in the Liberal Arts Championships Feb. 18-20.

The women’s team took home first place and the men finished second, ending their run of five consecutive Liberal Arts Championships titles, according to Sports Information.

When Michael Pettengill’s (‘10) family left their home in Fort Mill, S.C. to travel to Myrtle Beach in the summer of 2005, his father, Merle, and his father’s best friend, Tony Atkins, decided to ride ahead on their motorcycles instead of in the family’s van.

Track and field team raises money for ailing alumnus

The Luther Track and Field teams showed their support for alumni Johanna Olson (‘01) Saturday, Feb. 6 at the alumni meet. They held a 4-lap walk/jog to raise money for her medical expenses for her ongoing battle with a brain tumor. With roughly 300 people in attendance, including alumni, athletes and Luther staff, they were able to raise over $1,200.

The Luther track and field team means business this season with their new team motto, “We ain’t messin’ around this year.” The new motto has set the tone for team, and they are excited to compete with all that they have.
