After a long and stressful week, an hour of rejuvenating movement just might be what Luther students are looking for.
On Fridays at 5 p.m. and Sundays at noon, students gather in Luther’s dance studio above the main gym for hour-long yoga sessions. Remianah Nash (‘27) has organized these sessions and shares her passion for yoga with her students.
“Teaching these classes provides an environment for students to reflect on their internal and external health needs,” Nash said. “Yoga is medicine!”
Nash describes yoga as “a practice of stretching both the mind and body by opening them up to relaxation and centering them together as one.” During sessions, Nash reminds students that everyone is welcome regardless of skill. Students are encouraged to do whatever is necessary to help them come to peace with their body and mind, whether it be following Nash’s exercise demonstrations or sitting in child’s pose for the duration of the session. One of the regularly attending members is Mira Melander (‘27).
“Weekly yoga classes are a great way to decompress at the end of a long week and get back in touch with my body and my emotions,” Melander said.
Nash believes that students can bring their attention to a simple thing: their breathing. Breathing is the key to centering thoughts, emotions and the body. Students can open their minds to internal self-reflection by slowing life down for a little bit and focusing on themselves.
For students who feel they have become overloaded throughout their day, Nash’s classes provide a way for them to let go of any tension they have. Nash welcomes everyone to join her yoga sessions, from beginners to experienced practitioners alike. More information about Nash’s yoga classes can be found at @yogawrem on Instagram.
