The sororities on the Luther College campus kicked off their recruitment this semester with Greek Week. Alpha Beta Psi (ABY) and Tau Delta Gamma (TDG) held Greek Week events from Monday, September 23 through Friday, September 27.
On Monday, both groups tabled outside of the Dahl Centennial Union with goodie bags with candy and Greek Life stickers while talking to students passing by about the events to attend for Greek Week. On Wednesday, they tabled outside of the Cafeteria in the Union, informing students about their individual philanthropies. On Thursday, they held “G(r)eek Out,” which was a trivia event in Marty’s. Lastly, to close out the week, “Dante goes Greek” — a Greek themed Dante’s Disko — was held in Marty’s. Students were encouraged to wear togas, white outfits, and olive crowns.
ABY President Kelsey Bratland (‘25) shared that ABY’s situation is unique because the group’s participation died down significantly during the Covid-19 pandemic. She said that ABY “was recently started back up in 2023.”
Both sororities see Greek Week as being important for recruiting new members and showing students what options are available for Greek life. However, instead of approaching the week as a competition, each event was planned by both sororities as Bratland pointed out.
“Each event was planned by both sororities together, which I believe helped foster a cohesive Greek environment on campus,” Bratland said.
TDG had a very similar approach to Greek Week. Sister Relations Chair Annika Benson (‘26) believes Greek Week was special in how it fosters community.
“Greek Week informed students about the sororities on campus,” Benson said. “[The events] help us show students what we stand for. I joined TDG to build long lasting friendships and community.”
Miley Seaton (‘28) is a first-year student who is unaffiliated with either TDG or ABY since students are unable to get involved until sophomore year. Seaton attended multiple Greek Week events to learn more about the sororities on campus.
“I attended these events because Greek life seems interesting and fun,” Seaton said. “I’m interested in being involved in a sorority next year because I have a lot of friends involved in Greek life, and I have always been interested in being in some kind of sorority.”
Greek Week followed a busy spring semester for both sororities. Last year, ABY held a bar crawl called “Brew Ha Ha,” the 5k called “Stride Through Their Story” event, multiple fundraising campaigns and a senior sendoff. TDG held “Pink Night” — their largest fundraising event — sister bonding, a spring formal and weekly meetings.
