Eco Corner

By: Chelsea Tegels,

Welcome to the ECO corner! ECO stands for Environmental Concerns Organization. We meet every Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the Melanchthon Interfaith room (second floor of CFL) to discuss environmental and sustainability issues around campus, Decorah and the world. Our goal is to educate students and make a positive environmental impact around our community. Look for this column every week. In it, we’ll have some tips, a little news and information about upcoming events.

Tip #1:

While you sleep, make sure your electronics do too. Shutting down your computer and turning off your power strip at night are some easy ways to conserve energy.

Tip #2:

Save gas money and the environment by walking or biking into town. Bikes are available to rent at the library. Or if you need to pick up some bigger items at Wal-Mart, the Decorah Shopping Shuttle is running this Sunday, September 19th from 1:30 - 3:30PM. Go to luther.edu/sustainability/ for more information.

Campus News:

Have a free afternoon? Check out the new Luther College Natural Access Walking Trail. The 5-mile long trail runs along the Upper Iowa River as well as through Roslien Woods and other natural areas around Luther’s campus. It’s a great way to become more familiar with the campus we all call home. Trails and detailed walking guides can be found at http://luther.edu/sustainability under Outdoor Recreation: Trails.

Off-Campus News:

Nearly two weeks ago, first-years participated in a service project eradicating Buckthorn and other invasive plants. What many didn’t realize as they pulled plants and groaned about the heat is that Buckthorn is an invasive species from Europe that is destroying animal habitats and contributing to erosion. Because there aren’t any insects or diseases that can easily kill it, Buckthorn is spreading faster than native Iowan plants. Want to get rid of Buckthorn and other invasive species? Look for an event later this fall!

Events:

ECO Meeting: Sept 22, 8 p.m. to 9.p.m. Melanchthon Interfaith room, second floor CFL. Bring a mug for free tea and come discuss ideas for how to make our world a greener place.
